1st of May is celebrated every year around the world as labour day. On this day in 1884, the American Federation of Organized Trades and labour Unions demanded an eight-hour workday, and it comes into effect as of 1 May 1886. Since then, it’s celebrated as May Day globally.
During the era of industrialization in the 19th century, industrialists exploit the labour class and made them work for 15 hours a day. All the workers got united and rose against all the exploitation. They demanded paid leaves, breaks for the workforce, and wages for additional working hours.
May Day has also been an important official holiday in countries such as the People’s Republic of China, North Korea, Cuba, and the former the Soviet Union. In these countries, on May Day, it typically features elaborate parades including military hardware.
In the year 1955, the Catholic Church dedicated 1st of May to “Saint Joseph the Worker”. Saint Joseph is for the Church the patron saint of workers and craftsmen (among others).
In India, the first labour day was celebrated in 1923. Kisan party organized the May Day celebration in Chennai than Madras. This celebration was organized first on Triplicane Beach and then the opposite Madras High Court.
