Holi is known as the festival of colours. It is that time of the year when everybody is involved in dancing, playing and throwing colours on each other’s faces.  It is celebrated on the full moon day of Phalgun Purnima (the last lunar month). This year, in 2024, Holi will be celebrated from 24th March to 25th March. 

For most of us, Holi is the celebration of both love and colours, but there is more to it. Want to know what? Here are some interesting facts about Holi that you must be aware of.

1. It is a Spring Festival 

Holi is celebrated at the onset of the spring season. Traditionally it was celebrated with Palash flowers that represent the true essence of the spring season. 

2. Mythological Relevance 

According to Hindu mythology, Holi is the festival celebrating the victory of good over evil. The demon king, Hiranyakashyap was bothered by his son Prahlad worshipping lord Vishnu, which is why he asked Holika to sit in a fire pit with Prahlad. She had a special power of not having any effect on fire. Using this, she tricked Prahlad but Lord Vishnu Saved Prahlad instead of Holika. This is the reason why Holi is celebrated as a victory of truth and goodness over evil. 

3. Holika Dehan 

The Day Holika burnt to ashes is the day when women need to perform Dehan Holika. 

It is a ritual wherein Women light bonfires and burn Holika to prevent their homes from being attacked by demon attacks. Holika Dehan is an important ritual that must be done by women to protect their families against evil spirits or demons. 

4. Festival of love 

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna was dark in complexion due to which he thought Radha wouldn’t accept his love. However, on the auspicious day of Holi, when Lord Krishna smeared colours on her face, she finally accepted him. This is the reason why it is celebrated as the festival of colours and love. 

5. Global festival 

Holi is not just a festival of India, but it is also popular in other countries, especially where the Hindu population resides. Countries like Nepal, and Sri Lanka also celebrate the festival with sweets and vibrant colours. 

6. Food & Drinks 

Holi is incomplete without sweets and drinks like Gujiya and Thandai. Since Holi is celebrated at the onset of seasonal change, Gujiya and Thandai please both the health and aura of the Holi Celebration.
